Beatrix Potter used her own two pet mice, Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca, as models for the principal characters in this classic story. The doll's house belonged to a little girl she knew but that story of what happens when two mischievous mice invade an elegant doll's house is entirely imaginary.

Based on a real-life washerwoman whom Beatrix Potter had known, in this tale, the heroine Lucie meets a similar small, round, twinkly-eyed washerwoman; but this one has prickles under her cap and does laundry for some surprising customers.

To celebrate the Peter Rabbit Centenary, each of the 23 original Peter Rabbit books have been relaunched. Each book features re-scanned illustrations which capture the quality and bright colours of Beatrix Potter's unique watercolours.

Beatrix Potter described The Tailor of Gloucester as her own favourite among her books. It was based on the true story of a tailor who once left the unsewn pieces of a coat in his shop and then found that the garment had been mysteriously finished for him in the night. Although it turned out the real tailor's assistants were his apprentices, in Beatrix Potter's version of the story the secret helpers are skilful little brown mice who save the kindhearted tailor from disaster.

To mark the centenary of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" all 23 original Peter Rabbit Books are being re-launched.

By 1911, when Beatrix Potter was preparing The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes for publication, her books were already well known in America. The new story aimed to appeal directly to her many American fans and featured animals of American origin, grey squirrels, chipmunks and a black bear, all living happily in the Lake District woods.

Based on an Aesop fable, Beatrix Potter relocates this tale to the Lake District. The town mouse, Johnny, lives under the floorboards of a house in Hawkshead, and the country mouse, Timmy Willie, in a cottage garden.

Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny are back in this adventure that also features two particularly "disagreeable" villains. Fortunately, the villains hate each other, so when Tommy Brock kidnaps Benjamin's young family, Mr Tod might just be able to help.

Beatrix Potter used her own farmyard as the setting for this story, featuring one household pet, a little black pig, as the "perfectly lovely" Pig-Wig who runs away with Pigling Bland.

Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes, published in 1922, is a sequel to Beatrix Potter's first rhyme collection Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes.
